The story of Namayanja Annet, Butebe, Uganda.
Namayanja Annet had a plan for her family’s future. What she did not have was a single shilling to start it.
She joined the Butebe Saving and Credit Development Association hoping to build a better life, but even the small weekly savings required of members stretched her income to its edge. Many would have quietly stepped away. Namayanja kept showing up. Week after week, she stayed in the room, watching for any opening that might change her family’s story.
The opening came in the form of a piggery training, organized by the Association’s late Coordinator, Mr. Kalemeera Matia, whose heart for his community lives on in stories like this one. Namayanja sat in that training and listened like her children’s future depended on it, because it did. She learned how to raise pigs. She saw the opportunity clearly. Only one thing stood between her and a new beginning: the capital to buy a single piglet.
Then the gap closed. Seven Wells partnered with the Butebe Association to launch a piglet distribution program, and on April 25th, 2024, Namayanja became one of its very first beneficiaries. She received one piglet, and with it, the chance to put everything she had learned into practice.
She built a shelter with her own hands from local materials. She applied her training with the discipline of a woman who knew exactly what was at stake. Her pig thrived, and in its first litter gave birth to ten piglets. Namayanja sold nine of them and earned 810,000 Uganda Shillings, roughly $220. It was more money than she had ever held at one time in her entire life.
Then she did something remarkable. She did not simply spend it. She multiplied it.
Namayanja used part of her earnings to open a small fuel-selling business, giving her family a second stream of income. This year her pig delivered seven more piglets, which she plans to sell to grow the fuel business and provide for her children’s welfare.
One piglet has become a breeding herd. A breeding herd has become two businesses. And a mother who once struggled to save a few shillings a week now leads a family with real momentum toward lasting stability.
